With a portfolio of work that covers everything from street style to portraits, Alistair Guy is known for shooting some of the world’s most stylish individuals. Not your ordinary fashion photographer, Alistair takes a unique approach by choosing to photograph people in the industry itself.
A long friend of the brand, this year we are delighted to support Alistair Guy’s latest exhibition: Strong Women. His series of black and white photographs showcase exceptional women that Alistair has come to know through his work in the worlds of fashion, music and film. This exclusive exhibition will be launched at our London New Bond Street flagship and will then move to our newly opened Madison Avenue boutique.
“Women mentally are terribly strong but they are also fragile. I believe there is an incredible beauty in this dichotomy. The Strong Women project is a celebration of femininity as well as a celebration of each person and their character, their personality.”
Featuring influential figures of different ages and experiences, the inspiration for the exhibition draws on Alistair’s close relationship with celebrated supermodel Daphne Selfe. As one of the world’s oldest supermodels, she perfectly embodies the spirit of the strong woman.
“Strong women came about because of her [Daphne] being who she is; the fact has worked for 60 years within the model industry and also does yoga every day alongside having a family. She is a wonderful woman and quite inspirational.”
Shot on film using only natural light, what makes this exhibition stand out is the incredible honesty in each of the photographs. Many of the subjects were shot in their homes or at places which held a personal significance to them.
“I wanted them to open up and allow me into their space, to capture an intimate portrait of them. I shot everything on film so it was as real and as truthful as I could possibly get. Film it is much more considered because you know you’ve got only ten shots on each roll to get that shot…”
“Savannah Miller came into London for the day and allowed me to photograph her in Café Royal. She had been having quite a stressful time and so when she came in she just collapsed on the sofa, put her head back and I took a picture. I knew right away that was the shot. That’s how I like to photograph, when things are allowed to happen and I am able to capture the moment. That for me is what photography is all about.”
“Melanie Griffith is a beautiful woman, she has such a wonderful poise and straightaway I was intrigued by her.”
Alongside Daphne Selfe, Savannah Miller and Melanie Griffith, other exceptional women included in the Strong Women exhibition are Tippi Hedren, Tilly Wood, Daphne Guinness, Tamsin Egerton, Jade Parfitt, Amy Manson, Lena Gora, Shruti Ganguly, Jan De Villeneuve, Greta Ballamacina, Martina Bjorn, Brix Smith-Start, Elizabeth Von Guttman and Erin Tonkon.
The ‘Strong Women’ exhibition will be hosted at our 40 New Bond Street Boutique in London from the 27th of April through the 2nd of May. It will then move to our New York boutique at 667 Madison Avenue on the 4th of May to the 8th of May, coinciding with Frieze New York.
