In the sprawling metropolis that is Manhattan island, there are many delights to behold. To avoid traipsing to the east and west, upper and lower reaches we find we like to confine our explorations to one area. So when faced with the prospect of a day downtown, here are a few suggestions…
A day of pounding the pavement is the perfect excuse to indulge in bit of breakfast. We recommend starting your day at The Butcher’s Daughter whose freshly pressed juices and seasonal vegetarian dishes will leave you feeling almost too virtuous.
A stroll down towards Wall Street provides the perfect opportunity to view some of New York’s most interesting examples of modern architecture. A striking example of deconstructionism, 8 Spruce Street is well worth a gander. Designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry its furrowed surfaces create a wonderful ripple effect.
Another architectural element making its mark on lower Manhattan is the Oculus building. Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava to resemble the wings of a dove, it is also home to our new boutique at Westfield World Trade Centre.
Shopping can build up quite an appetite so we recommend heading over to Brookfield Place for a bite to eat with some excellent people and boat watching over the Hudson. We, of course, can’t help but indulge in the east coast delicacy that is the lobster roll (especially given such a healthy start to the day).
Wandering the green and flower-filled paths around Battery Park you will find yourself with an excellent vantage point from which to gaze at the famous Lady Liberty. We also recommend stopping in at Pier A Harbour House. Formerly home to New York City’s docks department and command centre for their fire boats, today its cavernous interior offers a myriad of culinary delights.
It is our belief that a perfect day downtown should be finished in style and the area is fit to burst with all sorts of cocktail establishments from the swish to the speakeasy. Our advice? Explore for yourself and see which one captures your imagination…
